The four biggest myths about sustainable products

Originally published on Skoy Enterprises LinkedIn.

The gossip mill loves making up stories about sustainable products. For some reason, products that are friendly to the environment get a bad rap! Our guess is big plastic is spreading these lies. Here are the four biggest myths about sustainable products.

Myth #1: They don’t work as well.

We’d like to have a chat with whoever spread this rumor. And also have them read over 10,000 5-star Amazon reviews for the Skoy Scrub. Sustainable products work just as well (if not better!) than their earth-damaging counterparts.

I could name a hundred examples. Reusable shopping bags that are sturdy vs. paper and plastic bags that break in the parking lot. Compostable dog poop bags vs. harmful plastic ones—they work exactly the same. Metal water bottles that are reusable and keep drinks warm/cold vs. plastic water bottles that make your water a gross lukewarm temperature. And so on.

Myth #2: They’re more expensive.

If you are looking at just the price tag, this may seem true. Sustainable products are often more difficult and expensive to make, making their price consequently more expensive. But although sustainable products have a higher initial cost, their cost overtime is usually cheaper.

Glass bottles for soap are a bit pricer than plastic ones, but the refill costs are much cheaper than buying a new plastic bottle every few weeks. And not only is the price of a pack of four Skoy Cloths ($7.99) comparable to a two-pack of paper towels ($6.79 at Target), but they last for months (if not years) longer. Just one Skoy Cloth can outlast 15 rolls of paper towels. Choosing the sustainable choice is a no-brainer there.

Myth #3: They’re smelly.

Smelly? Do you mean they smell good? As in they smell like lavender or citrus or any other beautiful nature smells? And not like harsh chemicals? Oh then okay, I guess you could call sustainable products smelly.

For instance, compared to a classic kitchen sponge, our Skoy Scrub lasts for months longer and when washed regularly carries fewer bacteria. The bacteria of old germs can give sponges a stench, but a Skoy Scrub can be placed in the dishwasher and come out smelling brand new.

Myth #4: They’re hard to find.

This one’s just outdated now. Perhaps back in the day it was difficult to find any product without harsh chemicals or could be recycled. But now, sustainable products are right there on the shelf next to their harmful counterparts.

They’re wherever you shop for groceries and household goods and most easily available online—everywhere!! Our Skoy products are all available on Amazon and could arrive at your door within 48 hours of ordering.

Living sustainably has never been easier. What’s your excuse?
